Role Overview

The Senior Electrical Engineer – Special Packages defines the technical strategy for specialist critical-power equipment packages across data center and mission-critical facilities, holds technical sign-off authority, and mentors junior and intermediate engineers.

The role leads vendor/OEM technical negotiations, owns compliance with IEC/EN standards and Portuguese regulatory requirements, and manages liaison with authorities, vendors, and clients from concept through commissioning, across CTS's EMEA project portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the technical strategy and specification approach for UPS/battery systems, standby generators, containerised/modular power modules, and specialist MV/LV switchgear packages.

  • Provide technical authority and design sign-off for special package scope.

  • Lead technical evaluation, negotiation, and selection of OEM/vendor packages (e.g., Schneider Electric, ABB, Vertiv, Eaton, Caterpillar, Cummins), including factory acceptance testing (FAT) strategy.

  • Lead interface coordination between special packages and MV/LV switchgear, generators, and UPS/battery systems across the wider electrical design.

  • Conduct design risk assessments and lead value-engineering/optimisation reviews for special package scope, including battery technology (Li-ion vs. VRLA) trade-off studies.

  • Lead multidisciplinary MEP/BIM coordination and enforce modelling standards and BIM execution plans for special package rooms and yards.

  • Oversee design and installation quality; lead commissioning, load-bank testing, and integrated systems testing of special package equipment.

  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and review their design deliverables.

  • Liaise with authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), utility providers, OEMs, and clients on special package compliance and delivery matters.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; Master's preferred.

  • 10+ years in electrical engineering with a strong focus on critical power packages, including experience leading mission-critical/data-center design.

  • Expert command of IEC 60364, IEC 61439, EN standards, and Portugal's RTIEBT as applied to special package equipment and MV/LV interfaces.

  • Familiarity with DGEG registration requirements in Portugal.

  • Advanced proficiency across AutoCAD Electrical, Revit MEP, Navisworks, and ETAP or SKM PowerTools for interface and protection studies.

  • Deep knowledge of UPS technologies (Li-ion vs. VRLA), generator/genset specifications, containerised/modular power systems, and MV switchgear interface requirements.

  • Extensive experience negotiating and managing OEM/vendor relationships (e.g., Schneider Electric, ABB, Vertiv, Eaton, Caterpillar, Cummins), including FAT witnessing and commissioning leadership.

  • Proven leadership, mentoring, and client/authority/vendor engagement skills.
