About the Role
We are looking for a detail-oriented and proactive Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Porto office. This role is key in leading the design and specification of mechanical systems for Data Centers, taking technical ownership of assigned project scopes while mentoring junior engineers and coordinating closely with multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership
- Lead design and specification of mechanical systems (HVAC, piping, cooling, pumps) for assigned project scopes.
- Develop and validate detailed calculations, schematics, and drawings independently.
- Make technical design decisions within defined authority, escalating exceptions.
Standards & Quality
- Ensure designs comply with ASME, ISO, ASHRAE, and local codes/regulations.
- Lead or contribute to design reviews, audits, and risk assessments.
- Validate third-party or junior-prepared designs before issuance.
Team & Mentorship
- Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers; review their calculations and drawings.
- Take on temporary team leadership for specific projects or workstreams.
- Share domain expertise on software tools and design methodology.
Client & Cross-Functional Engagement
- Act as primary technical point of contact with clients for assigned projects.
- Coordinate directly with multidisciplinary teams (electrical, structural, civil) via ACC or similar platforms.
- Manage day-to-day project execution: timelines, budgets, deliverable quality.
Authorities
- Approve and issue mechanical design documents under supervision from the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer.
- Validate designs for compliance with standards and client requirements.
- Lead internal design audits and reviews when needed.
- Make design decisions and approve design changes during execution under supervision.
- Escalate non-compliance, delays, or budget concerns to the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (required).
- Master's degree or higher is a plus.
- Relevant certifications (Chartered Engineer, PE, PMP) are highly desirable.
Skills & Competencies
- Expertise in mechanical systems design, including HVAC, piping, pumps, and machinery.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or other mechanical design software.
- Strong knowledge of ASME, ISO, and local mechanical safety standards.
- Experience in energy efficiency and sustainable design practices.
- Excellent problem-solving and project management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication in English.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years in mechanical design engineering for large-scale, multidisciplinary projects.
- Hands-on experience with industrial, commercial, or infrastructure projects.
- Expertise in HVAC, piping, machinery, and thermal systems design.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver on time and within budget.
- Temporary project leadership of junior engineers when assigned by the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer.
