Competence Description: Platform Engineer Deployment, Automation, and Operations for On-Prem Data Center Operations

We are looking for a Platform Engineer to deploy, configure, operate, and maintain the Gapit platform and its supporting infrastructure at customer sites and in the centralized control room. A core objective of the role is keeping systems up to date with the latest security patches and software updates to maintain stability and performance. The environment runs on-premises and integrates with operational data streams, including InfluxDB as the time-series database and Kafka as part of the data pipeline. The role requires practical experience with Linux operations, deployment automation, networking, virtualization, security, and production operations in industrial or infrastructure environments.

Role and Responsibilities

• Install and update the Gapit system at customer sites using automated solutions such as SaltStack, cloud-init, or custom scripts.
• Configure, manage, and operate WireGuard VPN.
• Ensure systems are kept up to date with the latest security patches and software updates.
• Configure, manage, and operate Linux systems and Docker containers.
• Configure, administer, and operate virtualized systems using Proxmox, VMware, and Docker.
• Implement backup and restore strategies across applications to protect against system failure or data loss.
• Monitor the installed base using metric agents, and monitor system performance — resource usage, network traffic, and error messages — to identify issues before they affect users.
• Troubleshoot and analyze logs during incident investigation.
• Collaborate with customers' IT departments during installation and troubleshooting, and provide IT-architecture consulting on customer setups.
• Continuously seek new technology and solutions to keep the platform as automated and efficient as possible, and work proactively to improve the company's management system.

Required Competence

• Degree in computer science, engineering, or an IT-related field (preferred), or equivalent practical experience and certifications.
• Practical experience with, or certifications in, Linux, and solid knowledge of the Linux operating system and Docker containers.
• Network management and configuration experience.
• Knowledge of security principles and the ability to implement security solutions, including firewall configuration.
• Strong problem-solving skills to quickly identify and resolve issues encountered on the system.
• Ability to explain trade-offs related to availability, security, performance, and operational complexity.

Systems and Automation Competence

• Ubuntu Linux (and other distributions) configuration, hardening, and operations.
• Automated deployment and fleet management with SaltStack; provisioning with cloud-init or custom scripts.
• Python scripting for task automation.
• Virtualization using Proxmox and VMware; containerization using Docker (and Kubernetes where relevant).
• WireGuard VPN configuration, administration, and operation.
• Networking: routing, switching, firewalls, VLANs, and secure remote access.
• Backup, restore, and disaster-recovery operations.

Technical Environment

• Ubuntu Linux configuration, hardening, and operations.
• SaltStack and cloud-init for automated deployment and configuration.
• Docker, Proxmox, and VMware for containerization and virtualization.
• InfluxDB and Grafana for monitoring, with metric agents across the installed base.
• Kafka as part of the operational data environment.
• Identity, access, and secrets management.

Deployment and Operations Responsibilities

• Installing and configuring servers, operating systems, and runtime environments at customer sites.
• Configuring services using systemd, Docker, SaltStack, or Kubernetes.
• Managing patching, updates, backup, and recovery.
• Implementing monitoring, logging, alerting, and operational metrics.
• Supporting the per-site lifecycle from deployment into ongoing operations.
• Documenting configuration, deployment, rollback, and maintenance procedures.

Operational Requirements

• Maintaining secure, reliable infrastructure for continuous (24/7) control-room and site operations.
• Upholding security and hardening standards appropriate to critical infrastructure.
• Managing capacity, performance, and availability across connected sites.
• Handling incidents, failover, and recovery.
