PURPOSE OF THE ROLE The Secondary Design Engineer is responsible for the preparation and development of electrical design documentation related to protection and control systems for medium-voltage and high-voltage substations serving data center and industrial clients in the Scandinavian market. The role focuses on the production of detailed electrical schematics, protection and control panel designs, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings using EPLAN and AutoCAD. The position ensures that designs meet technical specifications, engineering standards, and project requirements. The Secondary Design Engineer works closely with the Protection Engineer (for scheme implementation into panel designs), the SCADA/SAS Engineer (for control system documentation), and other engineering disciplines to ensure the accuracy and integration of electrical designs across projects. Note: DCS Norway operates a competence-based resource model. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Protection & Control Panel Design
- Design protection and control panels for HV and MV substation projects.
- Prepare panel layouts and internal wiring documentation.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications and engineering standards.
- Support panel manufacturing documentation.
- Review technical documentation related to control systems.
Electrical Schematics Development
- Prepare detailed protection and control schematics using EPLAN.
- Develop wiring diagrams and terminal diagrams.
- Maintain drawing revisions and document control.
- Ensure schematic accuracy and consistency with project design.
- Support the preparation of final as-built documentation.
Interlocking & Control Logic
- Design interlocking logic and control sequences for substation equipment.
- Prepare control system documentation and specifications.
- Support control system integration with electrical equipment.
- Participate in system testing activities.
Substation Drawings & Layouts
- Prepare substation layout drawings using AutoCAD.
- Develop cable routing and cable schedule documentation.
- Support integration of electrical equipment layouts within substation designs.
- Coordinate drawings with civil and primary engineering partners.
- Assist in maintaining drawing registers and project documentation.
Engineering Coordination & Documentation
- Coordinate technical documentation with Protection Engineers and SCADA/SAS Engineers.
- Support interdisciplinary coordination within the engineering team and with external engineering partners.
- Participate in internal design reviews.
- Address engineering comments and design updates.
- Support project documentation updates during construction.
- Prepare and update cable schedules and documentation registers.
- Maintain project drawing databases and revisions.
- Support preparation of as-built documentation packages.
- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES
Education: Degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in protection and control engineering.
- Experience in preparation of electrical schematics and panel design.
- Experience working with EPLAN in protection and control systems.
- Experience with AutoCAD for engineering drawings.
- Experience in substation or electrical infrastructure projects is preferred.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in EPLAN and AutoCAD.
- Experience with cable schedules, panel layouts, and control schematics.
- Understanding of protection and control systems for substations.
- Familiarity with PRIMTECH and Revit is considered an advantage.
- Knowledge of IEC standards and engineering documentation practices.
- Experience with IEC 61850 projects is considered a plus.
- Familiarity with Nordic TSO standards is considered an advantage.
Interpersonal & Communication Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication in English (Portuguese is considered a plus).
- Ability to work collaboratively within engineering teams.
- Must be an EU Citizen able to work on-site across Scandinavia.
- Strong organizational and multitasking capabilities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to manage engineering documentation and deliverables.
- STRATEGIC PERFORMANCE METRICS (KPIs)
- Accuracy and quality of electrical schematics and drawings.
- Timely delivery of engineering documentation according to project schedule.
- Compliance of engineering documentation with project specifications.
- Effective coordination with engineering disciplines.
- Quality and completeness of as-built documentation.
- HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT (HSE)
- Comply with all applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation, regulations, and company procedures.
- Integrate safety-by-design principles into all engineering and project activities, ensuring that designs and solutions prioritise the safety of personnel, equipment, and the environment.
- Participate in risk assessments and hazard identification activities relevant to the role.
- Report safety concerns, incidents, and near-misses in accordance with company HSE procedures.
- Support the development and maintenance of a positive safety culture within the team and across projects.
- Ensure compliance with the company Integrated Management System (IMS) covering quality, safety, and environmental standards.
- REPLACEMENT POLICY In case of absence of less than one month, the role will be supported by another Secondary Design Engineer within the engineering team. For absences exceeding one month, a temporary replacement will be appointed by senior management according to DCS Norway replacement policy guidelines. The replacement person will assume the responsibilities outlined in this job description to ensure continuity of engineering activities.
