Role Overview The Senior Mechanical Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for mechanical systems in construction projects during the bidding phase. This role involves evaluating project requirements, performing quantity take-offs, and collaborating with the Bids Team to develop competitive and comprehensive proposals.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, piping, and fire protection.
- Review tender documents, such as drawings and specifications, to determine project scope and requirements.
- Perform quantity take-offs and calculate material, equipment, and labour costs.
- Obtain and evaluate quotes from suppliers to ensure competitive pricing.
- Identify cost risks, opportunities, and alternative solutions for value engineering.
- Lead collaboration with the Mechanical Estimating Lead and the broader Bids Team to align estimates with overall project proposals.
- Develop pricing schedules, tender breakdowns, and supporting documentation for submission.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and discussions to gain insights into project requirements.
- Maintain and update cost databases, historical data, and unit rates for mechanical systems.
- Analyse market trends, material costs, and labour rates to ensure accurate and current estimates.
- Lead post-bid reviews by analysing performance and identifying areas for improvement.
- Lead coordination with other discipline estimators to ensure consistency and alignment across all project components, mentoring junior estimators.
- Perform any additional tasks or responsibilities relevant to the role as required.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- A diploma or certification in estimating or quantity surveying is an advantage.
- 5-15 years of experience in mechanical estimating within the construction industry, including experience on large-scale projects.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, and installation methods.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., CostX or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and tender documentation.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented and focused on delivering high-quality estimates.
